Authentic Sweet-Bread From Portugal Portuguese Recipe

Ingredients

  • 5 lb. non-bleach flour
  • 4 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 lb. melted butter
  • 1 dozen lg. eggs, beaten at room temperature
  • 1 pt. half & half (warm-hot)
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 4 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 c. warm water to dissolve yeast

Method

  1. Combine warm water, 1 tablespoon sugar and yeast
  2. Let stand for 15 minutes
  3. Combine sugar, eggs, and salt while stirring in heated half & half
  4. Make sure all sugar is dissolved before adding the yeast mixture
  5. Add flour, knead and fold the dough until it becomes dry and springy
  6. Cover and let stand for 1/2 hour
  7. Re-fold dough mixture and sprinkle small amount of flour on top
  8. Cover well and let rise in a warm place until double in bulk
  9. Shape dough into buns or loaves onto greased pans
  10. Let it rise again until double in size
  11. (Can use electric blanket to help rise
  12. Bake at 300 degrees (oven temperature may vary)
  13. Buns: 20-30 minutes
  14. Loaves: 30-45 minutes or until done and golden brown
