Ingredients

- 3 1/2 pounds chuck roast
- salt and pepper – to taste
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- paprika – optional
- garlic salt
- 2 cups water
- 4 medium potatoes – quartered
- 4 medium onions – sliced
- 4 large carrots – cut in large chunks
- 1 cup tomatoes, canned
Method
- Brown roast on all sides in hot skillet; rub with salt, pepper and sugar; sprinkle with paprika and garlic salt.
- Add water; cover and simmer for 3 hours.
- Adding water as needed.
- Add potatoes, onions and carrots.
- Simmer for 30 minutes.
- Add tomatoes and season to taste, simmer for 30 minutes longer.
- Thicken liquid for gravy is desired.
