Authentic Portuguese Easter Bread Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 c. warm water
- 2 envelopes active dry yeast
- 1 c. sugar
- 7 c. unbleached white flour
- 6 tbsp. powdered milk
- 6 beaten eggs
- 6 tbsp. soft butter or margarine
- 1 tsp. salt
Method
- Dissolve yeast in water
- Add sugar, powdered milk, and 2 cups of the flour
- Let bubble for 1/2 hour
- Add 5 eggs, butter and salt, then enough flour to make a smooth, kneadable dough
- Punch down, cut in half and shape into 2 round loaves; place in 2 greased 9-inch pie tins
- Let rise until doubled
- Carefully brush with remaining beaten egg and bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes
- This bread is also known as Hawaiian bread
