Slender, square, upright stems, 6 to 18 inches. Rough, hairy, lanceolate leaves are 2 to 3 inches long. Purple- red flowers are borne on a terminal spike. Grows in thickets and dry open woods. Perennial. Grow in any soil, sun to part shade. Zones 4-9.

The Benefit of using Usk as a natural cure
A tincture is the best way to take this herb. In my experience the dosage can vary a lot depending on how sensitive a particular individual is. My general advice is to try the minimum dose to begin with, but if you don’t notice the effect after half an hour take another minimum dose. Next time you use valerian you can try the larger dose straight away. If you feel tired after a dose, you have taken too much (unless you use it as a sleep remedy). I recommend that you use a concentrated tincture: 1:1 strength.

Contraindications, Indications, and Side Effects (Dodo) – Classed as a narcotic hallucinogen (?). “The caustic latex can cause permanent blindness if introduced into the eyes” (CRC).
