Authentic Green Tomato Chutney Recipe

Ingredients

Makes about 2 cups

  • 5 firm medium green tomatoes
  • 1 cup golden raisins
  • 1/3 cup minced onion
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger
  • 1 small dried hot red chile
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup water

Method

  1. Cut an cross in the bottom of the tomatoes and immerse them in a saucepan of boiling water for about 30 seconds to loosen the skin
  2. Remove the tomatoes from the water and submerge them in a bowl of ice water
  3. Peel, core and chop the tomatoes and set aside
  4. In a large saucepan, combine the raisins, onion, vinegar, sugar, ginger, chile, salt and water and bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently
  5. Cook for 5 minutes
  6. Reduce the heat to low and add the chopped tomatoes
  7. Cook until the mixture thickens, 30 to 40minutes, stirring frequently
  8. Cool to room temperature
  9. Remove the chile and discard before serving
  10. If not using right away, spoon the chutney into a container with a tight-fitting lid
  11. Cover and refrigerate until needed
  12. Properly stored, this chutney will keep for up to 1 week
