Ingredients
Makes about 2 quarts
- 3 cinnamon sticks, broken into thirds
- 1 teaspoon whole cloves
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 1 quart apple juice
- 2 cups cranberry juice
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
- 1 (16-ounce) bottle ale
- 1/4 cup sherry or rum (optional)
- 1 orange, cut into 1/4-inch slices
Method
- Enclose the cinnamon and cloves in a small piece of cheesecloth and tie it with kitchen twine
- Set aside
- In a large saucepan, combine the sugar and apple juice and stir over medium-high heat to dissolve the sugar
- Add the cranberry juice, lemon juice, ale and spice bag
- Reduce the heat to medium and simmer until hot, about 5 minutes
- Before serving, remove and discard the spice bag and add the sherry, if using
- Garnish with orange slices and serve immediately
