Popcorn Witch Hat And Broomsticks Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup light molasses
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 1/2 quarts warm popped popcorn

Method

  1. Licorice strings
  2. Candy corn
  3. Wooded skewers
  4. Combine sugar, molasses, water and salt in a heavy saucepan.
  5. Place over medium heat and cook, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  6. Wash sugar from sides of pan with a wet brush.
  7. Cook to 270 degrees Fahrenheit (soft-crack stage on a candy thermometer).
  8. Remove from heat; stir in butter.
  9. Pour glaze over popcorn and mix well.
  10. Shape as directed below.
  11. Witch’s Hat: Pack 1 recipe of mixture into a large buttered funnel or similarly slanted bowl.
  12. Immediately turn out the mold and finish shaping into a pointed cone with hands.
  13. Cool.
  14. To assemble hat, place popcorn cone on a 12-inch black cardboard circle or a 12-inch plate.
  15. Decorate brim of hat with candy corn and licorice string tie.
  16. Broomsticks: Make 1 recipe.
  17. Measure 1 cup of mixture to shape into each broom head.
  18. Insert wooden skewer for handle.
  19. Wrap with licorice string.
  20. Licorice strings also may be cut in 2 1/2-inch lengths and used for broom straws.
  21. Yield: 9 brooms
