Easy Portuguese Sweetbread Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 env. dry yeast
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. very warm water
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 c. milk
  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 4 eggs
  • 7 to 7 1/2 c. white flour

Method

  1. Bake at 325 degrees for 55 minutes
  2. Sprinkle yeast into 1/2 cup very warm water with 1 teaspoon sugar
  3. Let stand 10 minutes
  4. Heat the milk, butter, salt and remaining sugar in small pan
  5. Cool to lukewarm
  6. Beat eggs in small bowl
  7. Add to yeast mixture
  8. Add 3 cups flour and milk mixture
  9. Add 4 cups flour to make soft dough
  10. Turn out on floured board and knead about 8 to 10 minutes
  11. Put dough in buttered bowl until double (1 hour)
  12. Punch down
  13. Let rest 10 minutes
  14. Divide into 3 loaves and let rise 1 hour
  15. Bake 35 to 45 minutes
