Natural Cures and Remedies for Diabetes Type 2
Being overweight is the number one risk factor for developing adult-onset diabetes, and overweight children and teenagers now account for half of all new diagnoses of diabetes. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes among children has increased by an estimated fifteen to twenty-five times since 1980. Being overweight also increases the risk of hypertension, heart disease, gallstones, colon cancer, and (in men) stroke.
Some genetically related groups of people, such as Native Americans, are especially sensitive genetically to insulin resistance and diabetes. But this genetic propensity only means that they develop the disease sooner rather than later when exposed to modern Western-style food. Genes aside, the real cause of type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes is dietary.

Elevated blood sugar (glucose) levels, stemming from a diet with too many refined carbohydrates and sugars, also can increase inflammation in the body. People with insulin resistance commonly have high levels of C-reactive protein, a sign of inflammation. Insulin resistance is at the heart of Syndrome X and type 2 diabetes. Syndrome X, which increases the risk of both diabetes and heart disease, is also marked by fat around the waist, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol and triglycerides. For more information on Syndrome X see my earlier book Syndrome X.
Contraindications, Interactions, and Side Effects (Kola Nuts) – Caffeine in large doses is reported to be carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic. Caffeine is also viricidal, suppressing the growth of polio, influenza, herpes simplex, and vaccinia viruses, but not Japanese encephalitis virus, Newcastle disease, virus, and type 2 adenovirus. In 1978, an FDA advisory panel concluded that caffeine, as it is added to cola soft drinks, should be subject to a more restrictive regulatory approach.
Terry is a 40-year-old, 5 foot 6-inch mother of three who weighs 210 pounds. She has been overweight most of her life and now has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus). She attempts to reduce to her “ideal” weight of 130 pounds. Terry has tried many different types of diets in the past but has never been able to maintain this loss for long. She tells her doctor, ”I overeat carbohydrates and I crave them much too much to give them up.”

Extracts (Alfalfa) – Purines in seeds may raise mean serum urate levels (AEH). Porphyrins may photosensitize (PNC). Saponins decrease plasma cholesterol without changing HDL cholesterol, decrease intestinal absorption of cholesterol, increase excretion of neutral steroids and bile acids, and prevent atherosclerosis. Saponins hemolytic, may interfere with vitamin E utilization. Root saponins, selectively antiyeast and fungicide, also hypocholesterolemic, in monkeys (CAN). Saponin contents act on the cardiovascular, nervous and digestive systems” (PHR). Alfalfa sprouts, not recommended, contain trace of COX-2 inhibitor apigenin (70 ppm ZMB) (COX). Forty g heat-treated alfalfa seed, 3 ×/day/8 weeks, helped normalize serum cholesterol concentrations in Type 2 hyperlipoproteinanemia. Alfalfa extracts, possibly due to the high manganese content, may reduce blood sugar, but only in patients with inability to use their stored manganese (CAN).
