To treat cystitis, take thyme as tincture until the symptoms completely disappear. It is best to drink marshmallow leaf tea at the same time. For thrush, take thyme tincture as well as echinacea tincture.

Many herbs discussed in previous chapters have diuretic properties, and as such can be used whenever it is desirable to increase the volume of urine – for instance, during a bout of cystitis or urethritis. It is preferable to have diuretic herbs in a tea form, but a tincture diluted with a cupful of warm water will work just as well. You can choose from the following herbs: marshmallow leaf, celery seed (for precautions see page 139), birch, shepherd’s purse (for precautions see page 140), dandelion leaf, lime tree flower or nettle leaf.

The main problems which afflict the gall-bladder are an inflammatory condition known as cholecystitis and gall-stones. Gall-stones are usually caused by disturbances in the composition of the bile. A change in the ratio of cholesterol and bile salts may result in the formation of deposits. At the start, these may be in the form of fine gravel. But these fine particle constitute the nucleus for further deposits, ultimately leading to the formation of larger stones. An irritation of the lining of the gall- bladder due to inflammation may also led to the formation of particles.

Cystitis is an infection of the bladder, and it is as common as urethritis, which is an infection of the urethra (the narrow passage connecting the bladder to the outside of the body). If your symptoms consist of a burning sensation on passing urine, an urgency to pass water, and you need to pass water very often, you are most likely to be suffering from urethritis. If, on top of the above, you develop a pain above your pubic bone, become feverish and your urine becomes cloudy and smelly, you are most likely suffering from cystitis. Apart from taking the herbs described below, it is important to drink a lot of water (1 litre a day) to dilute the urine, as this will reduce the stinging and flush out the bacteria. Another common measure is to drink cranberry juice, preferably diluted and unsweetened, although this is only effective for some bacteria that can infect the urinary tract. You can also speed recovery by eating lots of parsley and celery, avoiding hot spices and alcohol, and taking yourself to bed with a hot water bottle.

You can use marshmallow leaf to make a very soothing drink if you have cystitis or urethritis. Marshmallow leaf provides really quick relief from the pain and stinging sensation in the urethra.
