Stressful and chaotic breathing patterns correlate with unpleasant emotional states such as anxiety and panic. This association has long been known, though various researchers and “experts” argue over whether there is any causative relationship between breathing and emotion. Still, anecdotally, many people find that calming the breath and restoring normal breathing patterns has beneficial effects on their emotional experiences.

Take calming herbs such as valerian, chamomile (for precautions see page 114) or lemon balm, either singly or in combination (see Chapter 13, on the nervous system, for dosages). Take the herbs from mid-cycle to the onset of your period, and throughout the period itself.

As an astringent, bearberry helps tone the tissues of the bladder, particularly when there is enure-sis (uncontrolled urination), kidney infection, prostate constriction, and incontinence. It has the triple action of calming and toning the tissues and serves as an astringent for excessive dis-charges. With incontinence, it seems to impart tone specifically to the sphincter of the bladder, which holds the urine in. For people who worry about needing a bathroom everywhere they go, bearberry can provide comfort. It has often been used to help dissolve kidney stones.
